One of the largest urban development projects in Germany is the PHOENIX See in Dortmund-Hörde. On the site of a former ThyssenKrupp AG (formerly Hoesch) steelworks, after around 160 years of steelworks history, a new local recreation area has been developed on a total of around 100 hectares, surrounded by attractive building plots. It was planned for five years until, after just another five years of construction, the official starting shot for the flooding of the lake was given on October 1, 2010. The project was implemented by the PHOENIX See development company - PHOENIX See 21 -, a subsidiary of Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG - DSW 21 - in cooperation with the Emschergenossenschaft and on behalf of the city of Dortmund. The city of Dortmund is also responsible for the urban planning idea for the lake project. DSW21 is responsible for marketing the vacant building plots. The operation of the local recreation facility PHOENIX See is ensured by the municipal drainage of Dortmund. The lynchpin of the "PHOENIX Lake" idea is the 24-hectare lake area, on which you can sail, paddle, row or just launch the model boat into the water. The spacious green areas in the immediate vicinity of the lake, including the Emscheraue on the northern edge of the lake, invite you to a variety of activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, skating or just taking a break. In addition, high-quality residential units, businesses and offices as well as a promenade with restaurants have been built around the lake. The lake is 1.2 kilometers long in an east-west direction and 320 meters wide in a north-south direction and with a water surface of 24 hectares it is larger than Hamburg's Binnenalster. The circular route around the lake is 3.2 km long.
Unfortunately totally overcrowded and yet totally beautiful. More and more people are using the cycle path instead of walking on their way. So many unnecessary braking maneuvers and stressful situations
Not far from home and (almost) always worth a visit. On nice days it is understandably quite crowded, so you should be considerate everywhere... I enjoy the sunrise on the way to work...
