    the sturgeon
The Stör is a tidal right tributary of the Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein. The river type is a marshland type.
The Stör rises about 15 km south-east of Neumünster near Willinggrade in the district of Segeberg. Shortly after its headwaters, it is dammed for the paper mill, which is now a listed building.
It then crosses the outskirts of Neumünster, the southern district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde and the district of Steinburg, and flows into the Elbe about 4 km north-west of Glückstadt. In the municipality of Heiligenstedten it reaches the marsh level; its course begins to meander from Itzehoe onwards. The river has a length of about 87 km and an average water flow of 21.7 m³/s at the mouth in the Lower Elbe.
From Itzehoe (river kilometer 53) to the mouth, the Stör can be used by commercial shipping, although it is becoming less important. Recreational shipping, on the other hand, also uses the Stör above Itzehoe. The Stör barrier, built two kilometers above the mouth in 1975, protects the lowlands along the Stör from the effects of storm surges. The structure has two shipping openings, each 22 m wide, with mortise gates.
Ebb and flow affect the water level of the Stör over more than half of its length from its mouth to above Kellinghusen (river kilometer 32); it is the only tributary of the Lower Elbe in which the tide swings freely and the tide limit is not defined by a transverse structure. The mean tidal range at the Störsperre is about 2.75 meters. The tide-unaffected Kellinghusen area up to the source has a catchment area of 1,160 km². The entire catchment area covers 1,781 km².

It is wonderful to hike on the dyke of the Stör. Only in winter is it sometimes very muddy.

It's really nice to know that it's only really nice here when the weather is nice. If it has rained or snowed, the dyke is impassable and you have to walk along it. There isn't much to see there, except lots of sheep dung mines. For nice weather hikes only!
