History

The small Sanctuary of Ospitale is the architectural evolution of a capital erected in 1680 on the place where the Madonna appeared to a deaf-mute young woman.

The apparition was linked to the discovery, on a poplar, of an image of the Madonna of Loreto painted on wood and for this reason called Madonna della Pioppa. Tradition and historical writings fix this event between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth.

The first historian to be interested in the miracle is M.A. Guarini who in his important publication on the churches of Ferrara, dating back to 1621, reports that in the parish of Ospitale, an image of Mary dispenser of many graces was venerated.
