Best Road Cycling Rides to Napoleonic Canal

Tips

  • Obligatory passage to return to Ferrara: the road has a nice passage in the countryside and the crossing of the artificial canal. From here begins the cycle path on the bank of the Destra Po.

    HISTORY
As a concept of spillway of the great floods of the Rhine, the canal was born in 1807, under the dominion of Napoleon Bonaparte, to whom the Bolognese had asked to definitively provide for the hydraulic arrangement of the Reno river.

Napoleon left the solution of the problem to his trusty Gaspard de Prony, who arranged to join the river Reno to the river Po.

Historically, the floods of the Rhine caused very serious flooding in the plain, even after the construction of the Benedictine cable which had brought its waters into the ancient riverbed of the Po di Primaro and then flowed into the sea.
