Very beautiful cathedral and one of the symbols of the city, the abbey, originally built towards the end of the 10th century, was destroyed in 1689 by the troops of Louis XIV. From 1776 the church was rebuilt and fascinated by the rather simple appearance, nevertheless or just because of that worth seeing.

Rising from the center of Malmedy, the majestic cathedral is easily recognized as the focal point of the region. After the French Revolution, the Benedictine abbey was first converted into a parish church and later into a deanery, before the Eupen-Malmedy diocese (1921-1925) finally gave it cathedral status.

The old abbey was built at the end of the 10th century, but in 1689 French troops under Louis XIV destroyed the emblematic building and it had to be completely renovated and rebuilt. The reconstruction took place between 1776 and 1784 according to the plans of the Liège architect Antoine Galhausen, who originally came from St. Vith.
