Historic Old Town with Residenzplatz and Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzplatz is a particularly magnificent forecourt between the prince-archbishops' residences in the heart of Salzburg's old town. It is bordered by the New Residence including the carillon, the cathedral, the Old Residence and a closed facade of town houses.

Residence fountain
In the 17th century, Prince-Archbishop Guidobald Thun commissioned the Residenzbrunnen, which is now considered one of the most important European Baroque monuments. The four striking sea or water steeds, which seem to burst out of a rocky mountain, immediately catch the eye. If you look closely you can see men posing on the rock. They carry a shallow water bowl in which three dolphins hold a shell-like wavy pool of water.
