The town of Avolsheim is home to two jewels of ecclesiastical architecture: the Saint-Materne church, built by Johann Knauth, chief architect of Strasbourg Cathedral; and the Saint-Ulrich chapel, with its characteristic Romanesque octagonal bell tower. The chapel is a remnant of the old church of the town, which was demolished after the construction of the new one.
