According to a legend, the prisoner Johannes Ruhland offered to supply the upper town of Treysa with water if freedom was granted. So he built a moat from Sachsenhausen around Frankenhain to Hephata Mountain. From there, the water reached the upper town via pipes. For the inauguration in 1683, the Johannesbrunnen fountain was built on the market square in Treysa.
The people of Frankenhain also made use of the fresh water that flowed close to the town.
The Ruhland path follows the moat, which is still largely preserved today.
