Originally, in 1821, Chalon-sur-Saône was among the first cities in France to create a free school of drawing, keeping a collection of works of art within the building for artistic education. It is installed on part of the former Ursuline convent (1627).
In 1866, Jules Chevrier, merchant and municipal councilor from Chalon, obtained the creation of a museum dedicated to the riches of the heritage. Passionate about arts and archeology, he became its first curator. The museum moved into the walls of the drawing school, which moved to rue Fructidor and became the Media Art School (EMA | Fructidor).
After some work to transform the building, the museum presents its Fine Arts, Archeology and Natural Science collections with the encyclopedic ambition of the time. In 1895, in honor of the great man from Chalon, it was named Musée Vivant Denon. In 1957, the various donations of collections and the numerous archaeological discoveries, led the City to enlarge the museum by adding the former girls' school, located rue Boichot.
In the 1970s, when the curator and archaeologist Louis Bonnamour arrived, underwater research operations, unprecedented in Europe, were carried out in the Saône. These make it possible to considerably enrich the collections of the archeology section, which provides an overview of the human occupation of the Val de Saône, from prehistory to the present day.
