It has something meditative to watch the flow of water over the fish ladder. In rainy weather you can watch the fish in the reservoir from here.

The route to the upper reaches of the Ammersbek has become easier for fish and microorganisms since 2007. The fish ladder at the mill pond allows roach, perch and other fish species to bridge the weir there with a height difference of around 2.60 meters.

The relaxation pool was converted into a so-called sole slide in 2010.

For this purpose, gravel and stones of different sizes, 24 m long and 4 m wide, were installed with a slight gradient between the two staircase structures so that there was an even flow. On the one hand, blocking blocks, thresholds and blocking stones prevent the built-in material from being transported away and, on the other hand, ensure that small resting areas are created for the fish.

The migrations of salmon, sturgeon and eel are well known, and their feeding areas are often thousands of kilometers away from their spawning grounds. In general, however, all fish species, including those found in the Ammersbek, require habitats in different sections of a body of water. The different areas are needed as feeding grounds, spawning grounds and overwintering sites.

Along the Alster and Ammersbek, weirs and locks prevent movement between these areas. This fish ladder bypasses the weir at the mill pond. It consists of two wooden-lined channels that are connected to each other via a resting pond.

Both channels are divided into step-like chambers by transverse walls, which leads to the name “fish ladder”. Vertical slots in the transverse walls allow water to flow from chamber to chamber. They also create quiet areas in the chambers where the fish can rest on their way upstream.

Stones are set in concrete at the bottom of the channel. They enable microorganisms such as mussels, snails and crabs to overcome the current.

The fish ladder at the Mühlenteich is therefore an important part of the desired continuity from the source of the Ammersbek to the mouth of the Alster.
