After the cemetery had been moved away from today's Johanneskirche and in front of the Obertor in 1564, a cemetery chapel was built around 1575, in which a gallery was installed in 1633/34. In 1736 the church was extensively expanded and in 1739 the furnishings were renewed. In 1960 the cemetery church was extensively renovated inside and out.
The interior was renovated in 2007/08, and the exterior was renovated in 2010 after the construction of the municipal funeral parlor.
In 2016, wood flour emissions were observed in the cemetery church, which indicated a woodworm infestation. An expert found an active infestation by the common woodcarid beetle in various places in the church interior and recommended complete fumigation with a highly effective pesticide to prevent further destruction of the wooden parts.
No pest infestation could be found on the roof structure, but damage to the wall battens could be found. During the subsequent mapping of the damage to the roof truss, it became clear that most of the wall laths had extensive damage due to rot.
The fumigation of the church was carried out in June 2017 after the old Walcker organ had been removed.
This was followed by the renovation of the roof structure, during which the damaged wall slats were restored by a carpenter.
The renovation was completed at the end of November 2017.
