The free-standing tower is a striking landmark in the center of the village of Nes. The bell tower, built from many small yellow stones, stands on a small elevation. It was built in 1664 by order of Valerius (Watse) Frans van Cammingha and Rixt van Donia, then the Lord and Lady of Ameland.

In 1732 it was raised by order of Prince Willem IV, then the Lord of Ameland, to also serve as a landmark for shipping. At that time the spire was replaced by the current gable roof.

The freestanding bell tower of Nes was built in 1664 on behalf of Watse Frans van Cammingha and Rixt van Donia. In 1732, the tower was raised by a section and fitted with a gable roof on the orders of Willem Karel Hendrik Friso. The three-tiered gable roof tower is a national monument. The shield with the year above the entrance concerns a renovation in 1890.
