The Klever Schüsterken became the “Spuckmänneken” because a water-spouting figure was more effective for a fountain.
The Spuckmänneken is reminiscent of the old days in Kleve, where whistling cobblers were on their way to work and the tradition of Priemen (chewing tobacco). In the 19th century, the Kleve region was one of the No. 1 shoe towns. At that time, there were countless small shoemakers who did their work in Kleve.
