Best Hikes to Saint-Mathieu Abbey Ruins and Lighthouse

Tips

  • In the far west of Finistère, Pointe Saint-Mathieu illuminates the dark waters of the Atlantic. On a rocky promontory which endures the most heated anger, a lighthouse erected over the ruins of an abbey dating from the 6th century guides sailors coming from the ocean. Between nature and history, the charm operates.

  • Interesting coastal point - there is a lot to see here. Traces of the 2nd WW, lighthouses and abbey ruins.

  • The Saint-Mathieu peak is touched by the "GR® 34" hiking trail. This 2000 km long hiking trail leads from Mont St.Michel to Saint Nazaire, just before Nantes. The routes that I walked on the Crozon peninsula were wonderful, but also a bit demanding. On the komoot map it is always marked as "Sentier Côtier". It is well marked with red and white markings, the paths are rocky and sometimes (if it comes down from the beach straight back onto the going up the next cliff) is also steep. You need sure-footedness and good footwear. Sometimes a head for heights, long trousers, a windbreaker because of the sometimes very changing weather conditions in Brittany, sun protection and a good insect repellent for open areas of skin. Because you often go through heather bushes and sometimes due to high fern growth. On the beach section of La Palue I was attacked by sand flies, black flies or grass mites or all of them while photographing orchids. After the tour I had a crumb cake thigh - despite wearing long trousers. Nevertheless, this is an absolutely recommended hiking trail that you can also hike in sections. A backpack with provisions and water is also appropriate, you really hike for miles in beautiful nature and the nearest beach bar is far away :-). The hiking trail has its own French-language website and is also called GR 34 "Le Sentier des Douaniers", i.e. the path of the customs officers. The usual precautionary measures on hiking trails on the cliffs must be observed, and temporary closures must also be observed.
