The Temple Society is a free church originating from Württemberg Pietism. In 1873, the Templars purchased a piece of land near the Old City of Jerusalem from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. The settlement of Emeķ Refa'im, which has a more urban character, was striking because of the fact that the street was lined with trees on both sides.

The cemetery has a memorial for 24 Templars who died as German soldiers in WW I. After the British conquest of Palestine, most of the Templars were interned in Egypt, but returned a few years later. Before WW II, many Templars sympathized with National Socialism. The British mandate government deported the Templars living here to Australia in 1941. A last group remained in a hospice until the end of the war. Some of them, as members of the NSDAP, were expelled from Israel in 1949, the rest left Israel the following year.
