The church stands on the site of a Byzantine church, which was built by Eudokia in honor of Mary. The now visible building was built by Avda, the widow of Baldwin I, in 1142, because next to the Bethesda pond, the apartment of Joachim and Anna, the parents of Mary, was suspected. If you take a closer look at the façade of the church, you will notice that the walls are slightly inclined - an architectural feature typical of medieval France that symbolized the crucified body. The French government commissioned the architects Honoré Daumet and Christophe Édouard Mauss (1829-1914) with the restoration. The building has retained its original austere beauty to this day and is a testimony to the architecture of the 12th century, probably the most beautiful preserved Romanesque church in all of Jerusalem. The new high altar of the three-aisled pillar basilica was made in 1954 by the French sculptor Philippe Kaeppelin. On it are the Annunciation, the Nativity and the Deposition of the Cross. The interior of the church is known for its long-lasting reverberation. Anyone who sings here can experience it for themselves.

The "Saint Anne" (in English "Saint Anne") is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, i.e. the grandmother of Jesus Christ - not attested in the biblical texts. However, it is mentioned in apocryphal writings (that is, writings that are not included in the canon of the Bible), for example in the so-called "Protoevangelium of James". There is no historically reliable information about the life of Anna, but there are numerous stories that have been handed down, which are summarized, for example, in the medieval "Legenda Aurea" by the Dominican monk Jacobus de Voragine.
Among other things, she is the patroness of the Annakirche in Düren (Germany), where a piece of her skullcap is kept as a relic.
In the church calendar, the memorial day of Saint Anne - together with her husband Joachim - is on July 26th.

You can sing in this church. We heard beautiful songs from different groups/individuals from different countries. Wonderful acoustics.
