The town hall of Oudenaarde is a beautiful example of Brabantine late Gothic and one of the most iconic buildings in the city. It was built between 1526 and 1536 under the direction of architect Hendrik van Pede. The building stands on the site of the old aldermen's house and is connected to the 14th-century cloth hall, which served as a storage and sales room for textiles.
The town hall has an impressive facade with fine sculptures and a belfry tower, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999 as part of the "Belforts of Belgium and France". A bronze statue of Hanske de Krijger, a folk hero from Oudenaarde, adorns the tower.
Inside the town hall is the MOU (Museum Oudenaarde), where you can admire, among other things, the famous tapestries of Oudenaarde and a collection of goldsmith's work.

The late Gothic town hall of Oudenaarde was built between 1526 and 1537, after the demolition of the Romanesque ship's house to which the still existing cloth hall in Tournai brick was connected. The facade of the current town hall has a perfectly symmetrical structure. This symmetry has also been pursued in the side facades and in the ground plan. The belfry tower is central. The crown on the tower and the gilded eagles symbolize the world empire of the then monarch, Emperor Charles.

On the spire of the town hall stands a bronze statue of the local folk hero Hanske the Warrior. According to legend, the town guard Hanske was on the lookout for the arrival of Emperor Charles V. But because he fell asleep, the emperor stood in front of closed gates. He is said to have advised the people of Oudenaarde to buy glasses for their town guard. These glasses can still be found on the city's coat of arms today.

The town hall is worth seeing.
There are also some very beautiful houses around it, but no car-free area.
