The castle of Wartenstein was originally built to protect the old wine route from Neunkirchen, Gloggnitz via the Ramssattel, Hoch- and Niederwechsel into the Lafnitz valley. The southern part of the castle, the Romanesque tower to the left of the entrance, still points to this old part of the complex.
The Stubenbergers built in the 13th century. the northern, larger of the two newly built square towers with the extensive ring wall, gate tower, round gate and pedestrian gate. The Gothic Epiphany Chapel was also built at this time.
The castle later became the property of the sovereign and came into its own in the 15th century. in the possession of the St. George Knights Order. The castle was later mortgaged and destroyed by the Turks in 1529. Then rebuilt and in 1645 rebuilt and expanded. There were also: bastions, a new gate tower and a second chapel.
The plant was built at the beginning of the 19th century. severely devastated by the French and restored in 1875 by Prince Liechtenstein. Heavily destroyed in 1945 by the front line that ran through here and acquired by the "Wener-Gren-Foundation" in 1950 and equipped with great expense from 1957 onwards.
