If necessary, the anti-tank ditch can be fed with water from the Kempen Canal.

All explanation is on the plaque, get off and read ;-)

I had the pleasure of visiting these bunkers and site, exceptionally, with a private guide as part of the 'Battle of Lochtenberg'.

Quite an impressive experience of a "forgotten battle".

Tapsluisbunker Noord and Tapsluisbunker Zuid provide the water supply, via the Kempisch Canal, of the Anti-tank ditch (ATG).

Two tapsluis on either side of the canal 'tap the water' and regulate the supply. The tap mechanism of Tapsluisbunker Noord is well preserved and can still be operated manually. Technical data: the roof and outer walls are 1.3 metres thick and can withstand 150 mm artillery. Both tapsluisbunkers have two floors; the lower floor defended the Anti-tank ditch, the upper floor protected the towpath.

From this Tapsluisbunker Noord, murderous fire was spread to the other side during the Battle of Lochtenberg. Canadian infantry was hidden in foxholes and old Belgian trenches.

Eventually this bunker (just like the Tapsluisbunker Zuid) was taken out.

Bomb and bullet impacts bear witness to a fierce battle.

During the period from 24 September to 2 October, 122 Canadian soldiers were killed by barrage at this location.
