The Caffarella Valley extends for about 190 hectares between the Aurelian Walls, Via Latina and Via dell’Almone. The name derives from the main historic estate of the Caffarelli family, who built the farmhouse called della Vaccareccia here around the sixteenth century, still present in the park.
The valley is crossed by the Almone river and hosts numerous archaeological remains of tombs, villas, towers and hydraulic works. The Roman quarry of the Appia Antica extends for several kilometers in the subsoil of the Caffarella Valley, which can only be visited with a guide on weekends and holidays.
