The Harz National Park is one of the largest German forest national parks and the first transnational national park in Germany. It was founded in 2006 through the merger of two individual national parks in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. 97 percent of the national park area is covered with forest. With an area of almost 25,000 hectares, it takes up around 10 percent of the total area of the Harz Mountains. More than 10,000 animal and plant species find a protected refuge here.
