Basalt was mined at the site of the lake, popularly known as Silbersee, until the 1970s. The area is now a nature reserve, so if you come to the lake on a hike, please stay on the paths and only view the cliffs from a distance.

One of the most beautiful quarry ponds I know. Basalt used to be mined there. The lake is actually called Mahlscheid, but is also called Canyon or Silbers. The border between RLP u. NRW. The area is under nature protection.
Therefore it is better to inquire at the Herdorf o. Daaden administration when and where you can run. Otherwise it might be expensive.
