Of the "classic" cities of Avignon, Arles, Nîmes and Montpellier, I find Montpellier the liveliest and also the most beautiful, perhaps because it is the largest with 300,000 inhabitants. Nîmes is also lively with 150 T, but the old town is smaller and not as beautiful as in Montpellier. Avignon and Arles with 90 T and 45 T are significantly smaller, and Arles in particular seems a bit sleepy or overrun by tourists. Another advantage of Montpellier is its proximity to the sea. The beach can be reached by bike in 45 minutes.
