Construction of the cathedral began around 1150. The church was completed around 100 years later. It replaced an older stone church in the same place. Christian graves from the mid-9th century were found south of the cathedral, so Ansgar's church was probably here after 860 as well. The cathedral is the main church of the Ribe diocese, which stretches from Tønder almost to Holstebro.
