The root area of a conifer photographed here is a beautiful example of how the tree's root system adapts to the conglomerate substratum to gain a firm foothold.
Conglomerates are found along the entire perimeter of the Alps; geologically young conglomerates are called Nagelfluh (conglomerates). Nagelfluh, also jokingly referred to as "Herrgottsbeton" (conglomerates of the Lord), is reminiscent of poorly sorted or vibrated exposed aggregate concrete.
The Nagelfluh (conglomerates of the Northern Alps and the Alpine Foothills) is a geologically young conglomerate composed of erosion material from the Alps, in which river pebbles are baked together with a binding agent. The binding agent is usually limestone, sometimes dolomite or quartz. The Nagelfluh (conglomerates of the Subalpine Molasse) formed in the Tertiary period, while that of the Alpine Foothills and the Alpine valleys was partly formed in the Quaternary period from glacial cover gravel.

Very nice to look at, the view of Lake Constance between the trees is of course also beautiful.

It's amazing how the tree roots cling to the boulder
