The Church of Agia Sophia dates back to the 8th century. It bears an unmistakable resemblance to its namesake in Istanbul, Turkey, with its cruciform layout, central dome, and intricate mosaics and frescoes.

It's well worth visiting the church and the surrounding Roman square.

The downtown area between Hagia Sophia Park and Aristotle Square has been the center of Thessaloniki since its foundation in the fourth century BC. Layers of civilizations are piled atop each other, but the roman square layout of the second century AD prevails. Predominantly pedestrian, its most typical aspect is probably in the permanent market halls west of the square.
