The "Old Market Hall" was built in 1785 as a hall for market traders. The so-called Kraambudenhaus was designed to separate the stench and noise of the fish stalls from the hustle and bustle of the market. Duke Friedrich - called the Pious - is said to have been bothered by the fact that goods such as textiles, clothing and other goods were traded outside on the Schwerin market square alongside fish and meat and noisy "market women" and in all weathers. He ordered the construction of a market hall for traders in textiles and other goods, which was completed in 1785. From then on, the building was also known as the "Krambudenhaus". Today the name pillared building is more common.

A real eye-catcher is the building on the market square, decorated with 14 Doric columns. But anyone who now thinks that the people of Schwerin also acknowledge this is wrong. They call it plain and simply a Krabden building. Officially, however, it is called "New Building". Which of course is just as surprising. The building was actually new - but in 1785, when it was opened as a market hall to replace the small shops on the market. However, that didn't work for a long time. The junk shops were soon back on the market. This is also the case every Saturday today, while there is a café in the market hall instead.
