The manor house that Napoleon must have once ridden past has seen a lot. Acquired as a family retreat in the event of war, it served as a safe place for more than 50 people during the bombing of Hamburg and as a shelter for Russian soldiers.

Gut Settin is located east of the state capital Schwerin in the northern area of the Lewitz nature reserve. An avenue of chestnut trees leads to a roundabout behind which stands the manor house, a single-storey brick building above a high basement of carved granite.A small, well-tended park stretches behind the manor house and leads to the shore of Lake Settin. In the 16th century, Settin was known as the main state stud for its horse breeding. The estate was owned by the Zarnekow family in the mid-19th century and by the Rehm family in the early 20th century. In 1939, the Hamburg couple Ilse and Carl Gustav Oertel acquired the estate and were expropriated in 1945 as part of the land reform. In 1995, four of Carl Gustav Oertel's grandsons acquired the manor house and renovated it from 1996 to 1998, at the same time the outdoor facilities were redesigned. In 1998, the Seehof Settin was opened as a guest house, and holiday apartments were built in an adjacent building. A caretaker's house was completed in 2002 and log homes were added in 2004.gutshaeuser.de/de/guts_herrenhaeuser/gutshaeuser_s/gut_settin
