Before the miners entered the tunnels at Inzeller Kienberg and Rauschberg, they gathered on the Fahrießboden, a small high valley above Schmelz. In the chapel, they met for prayer, as stipulated by operational regulations. The building was erected in 1681 as a small wooden structure. Around the year 1800, the chapel was enlarged. It was consecrated to the mining patron saints Barbara and Katharina.
