The abbot's palace in Oliva was built between 1754 and 1756. The building was donated by the last Polish abbot of the Cistercian monastery, Jacek Rybiński (1701-1782), as an extension of the so-called Old Abbot's Palace, which was built in the 15th century. After lengthy negotiations, the "Treaty for the Regulation of Diocesan Affairs of the Catholic Residents of the Duchy of Oldenburg" was signed on January 5, 1830, usually referred to as the Convention of Oliva after the place of negotiation, the seat of the Prince-Bishop. This created a bishopric of Munster's official office, and its official was granted far-reaching autonomy from the bishop of Munster. On October 1, 1831, the monastery in Oliwa was liquidated and its estates divided between the city of Danzig and the Prussian king

The building remained unused for a very long time, only in 1926 the State Provincial Museum of Gdańsk History was established. Totally burned down in 1945, the palace was rebuilt in the 1960s as the seat of the Ethnographic Department of what was then the Pomeranian Museum. Since 1989 the Palace has housed the Department of Contemporary Art of the Gdańsk National Museum.

In the immediate vicinity are the monastery and the cathedral of Oliva.
