On August 26, 1904, the real estate company "Domaines de Schotenhof" was founded by some Antwerp merchants. They had bought land (324 hectares) of the former abbey of Villers from the family Le Sergeant d'Heudecourt.
Their intention was to create a "country retreat" for the wealthy; modeled on the "courts of plaisants" of the Renaissance.

The soul of the domain became the hotel-restaurant "Schootenhof", the current Iepenburg. The "Domaines de Schootenhof" obtained from the neighborhood railways that the tram line was extended to the hotel; in return the owners built a tram station with a buffet and a stand for the horses.

The Antwerpers had found their way to Schotenhof. On summer Sundays, the well-to-do Antwerp residents came to Schotenhof by carriage, chaise, tram or horseback to enjoy a peaceful stay in the greenery. The access roads were then guarded and only decently dressed people were allowed in. Well dressed meant with hat and tie, others were sent away.

In the summer horse races and airplane meetings and tennis matches were arranged, while the walkers could relax in the "Laiterie" of the hotel (now Vijverhof). In the winter, people skated on the flooded meadows in front of the Hotel Schootenhof. Beautiful dance parties, the so-called "Fêtes Champêtre", were organized in the hotel.

Iepenburg is a household name in Schoten and the wider region. The Grand Hotel de Schootenhof, as it used to be called, was a stopping place for the wealthy Antwerp bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century. The 'Domaines de Schotenhof' was founded by some Antwerp merchants. They had purchased land from the former abbey of Villers with the intention of creating a country retreat for the upper class.
After the Second World War, the fashionable resort of Iepenburg, together with the playground, became a place of entertainment and fun for the common man.

Iepenburg 2.0 has now become a residential unit with respect and preservation of the past.
