The Schans or Redoute Schilde was built in brick and unreinforced concrete on the right bank of the Scheldt. It was located on an oval island surrounded by a 15 m wide moat, with an earthen cover and a wooded area around it.
The site has a total area of approximately 2 ha.
It was part of the main defense line of the city of Antwerp, provided for by law of March 30, 1906, located between the fort of 's Gravenwezel and the fort of Oelegem and in defense of the Turnhoutsebaan.
Update 14-6-22 signs have been placed that cycling is no longer allowed on the island itself.

This brick and concrete entrenchment was built between Fort van ’s-Gravenwezel and Fort van Oelegem in 1909-1912 to defend the Turnhoutsebaan. During the First World War, the redoubt fired maintenance fire at the German army. On October 9, 1914, the Belgian army withdrew from the entrenchment and the entrenchment was blown up so that it would not fall into the hands of the enemy. The building has been in disuse ever since.
