Tips

The view from the bastion is unbelievably beautiful, optimally you probably enjoy it during the week when there are fewer tourists there.

The bastion is always well visited. Even with the now closed vantage point, the views into the Elbe Valley are impressive.
Visit during the week and early in the day.

In every season, even in late autumn, because it is not so crowded.

One of the most popular views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, so the whole area in the main season and in good weather but also quite "crowded"

If you walk the Malerweg, you will pass the bastion where you will be rewarded with great views.

Best travel time is in the fall because of the great foliage color.

The bastion, Felsenburg Neurathen is best visited in the early morning hours.

The way up is exhausting, but you can also go up and park (paid) at the top. The bridge is exciting and the views really great.

The Bastei is the most famous rock formation in Saxon Switzerland and therefore also the most popular excursion destination in the region. Robber barons were once up to mischief here. Then came the romantics. Today the bastion is the most popular sight. From the bastion view (half of which had to be closed for security reasons) there is a unique panorama with a view of numerous sights such as the Lilienstein or the Königstein. A 76.5 m long bridge runs through the rock formation. From the Bastei bridge in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains you can also enjoy a fantastic view. You can also cross the bridge to the famous ruins of the Neurathen Castle. It is the largest medieval rock castle in the region. Other imposing vantage points, such as the Ferdinandsfels and the Kanapee, offer spectacular views into and over the Elbe Valley and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.saechsische-schweiz.de/region/highlights/bastei.html

Best travel time is spring and fall, overcrowded in the summer due to too many tourists.

Foremost Spitz is currently closed (Sep.2017) Because weathering has been detected on the rock.
    But there are already plans.

It is worth getting up early for the Bastei and the Bastei bridge! Not only that the light is the most beautiful for photos, there are just not that many people on the way! Since it is the tourist highlite in the Saxon Switzerland, one can imagine well how full it can be there! If you choose the front direct rise from the resort Rathen it is very crisp uphill, but the views you get here at the various viewing platform, are worth the effort! Shortly before reaching the goal you have the opportunity to visit the castle rock. If you are free from giddiness, you should not be deterred by the € 2 entrance fee. When we were there, the cash register was not yet occupied and you have thrown your obolus in a box. Really just what a head for heights! You walk over lattice bridges under which many meters is nothing. The photos from there, which would certainly have become spectacular, were unfortunately all out of focus ....... I probably had too much trembling. On the Basteibrücke you will not stay very long, actually the view of the bridge is great! And you have it a bit further back, if you stop right after the bridge. There it goes at the end of a short path up some steep steps. Again, as so often today, but it's worth it!
And if you have now shot all the pixels available, you should also go to the viewpoint after the bridge left, the Bastei! From there you have a spectacular view of the Elbe, and the surrounding area! Here you can see the next worthwhile destination, the fortress Königstein. But now it's time to go back to Rathen, best about the Schwedenlöscher, which are well signposted. Again steps, but only downhill! A short stop at the signposted vantage point (hopefully there is still storage space on the camera) and a short rest on the Amselsee. Oh yes, my phone said on the day I was 70 stories up, well then the next visit to NY I can save myself in the Rockefeller Center the money for the elevator

Unfortunately, you can not reach the top any more, because the rock is at risk of falling. But also from further back the view is simply beautiful.

unfortunately, the front part of the observation deck is closed. But still you have a great view of the Elbe from here. And when the weather is fine, sometimes you can also see the Zugspitze ;-) (from the passing trains in the valley)
