Water march - water stop!

The water comes from outside and inside. Many narrow ditches and sluices run through the land behind the dyke. They are part of the drainage system of the marshland. marshland becomes

also called »alluvium«: It consists of alluvial sediments from the sea and the

rivers. In the past, these marshlands were dyked to use the land for agriculture.

The dyked area is called »Koog«. This inland area has to be constantly drained, since the polders are often lower than the water level of the adjacent bodies of water. There are, for example, water pumps, pumping stations and sewers. The Porrenkoog, which you can see here, was already diked in the 15th century.(...from the information board)
