Brown bears were present in this area until 1700. Those currently observable in the enclosures, however, are not intruders: they come from the old "Parterre" zoo in Livorno (later closed and today became the "Sandro Pertini" Park) and descend from the mythical Gigi Balla, a large and good-natured specimen of brown bear, darling of the Livornesi (now in their eighties) for its funny swinging gait.
