Kahl a. Main lies 102 meters above sea level and has the lowest point in Bavaria at the Kahl estuary. The riverbed there was changed several times between 1900 and 1930 due to coal mining. The Kahl flowed around the Emma-Süd opencast mine in a large arc, which is now occupied by the Hornsee. In its natural state it flows into the Main north of today's mouth.
