The overlooks offers uninterrupted views across newly formed land to the open Pacific. The village of Kealakomo once rested along the coast, but after 1868 it suffered an earthquake, a tsunami, and was subsequently buried by lava.
This overlook is a fantastic place to see the two primary types of magma on the island. Pāhoehoe lava flows quickly and forms silky silver-gray magma characterized by ripples and folds. Its name comes from the Hawaiian word "to paddle" because the swirls in the lava resemble the patterns created by an oar. ʻA'ā lava is slow, dark, and creates jagged landforms. Visitors can quite clearly see how both types of magma have built the island in recent years.

The viewpoint is currently blocked as a dangerous zone, for whatever reason. The view is great even from the street.
