After Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, Giovanni da Verrazzano was the third explorer of the American continent, but is considerably less well known than the first two. Like Vespucci, he came from Tuscany, and his birthplace, Greve in Chianti, is surprisingly far from the sea for a maritime monoplane.
Unlike the other two, he embarked on his voyage not under the Portuguese flag, but under the French flag, and explored considerably more of the North American coast than his companions until he fell victim to cannibals.
