Approximately 9,000 hectares of land in the North Sea resort of Bensersiel are drained by the sluice gate system. The inland area is drained via the Benser Tief canal and simultaneously protected from salty seawater and flooding. The lifting gates of the over 30-year-old sluice gate system automatically control the water levels in the canal. Only at low tide can the gates release about 30 million liters of water into the North Sea. One of Hieronimus's constant tasks is monitoring the water levels both outside and inside the canal, as well as the wind direction and speed.
