Schlagstein has a little more than 200 inhabitants. The small village is located directly on the Rur near the Obermaubach reservoir. There is no through traffic in town.
On the outskirts there is a stop on the Düren–Heimbach railway line called “Untermaubach/Schlagstein”. From here, the RB 21 of the Rurtalbahn GmbH runs at least every hour to Düren and Heimbach.
