The territory was bought in 1881 by Jacques van Marken, the director of the adjacent Koninklijke Nederlandsche Gist- en Spiritusfabriek in Delft (today part of DSM). In 1884 Van Marken founded the 'NV Common Property'. With the aim of building and renting healthy homes, boarding houses, workshops, shops, washing and bathing facilities.
Jacques van Marken was the first Dutch factory owner to set up a works council and accident insurance. Staff shared in the profits and earned hygienic and affordable accommodation. In fact, it is still revolutionary today…
