The mill was built in 1786 for the drainage of the 'Groote Oosterpolder', commissioned by Hendrik de Sandra Veldtman, lord of Slochteren and resident of the Fraeylemaborg. The storm of November 9/10, 1969 caused the entire mill to blow over and the cast iron upper shaft broke. As part of the Slochteren land consolidation, a restoration plan for the mill was implemented and the mill could be put back into use for drainage in 1974.
