Until the fall of 2012, the Serbian name of the town was Đeneral Janković, named after Serbian general Božidar Janković, who led Serbian troops in the Balkan Wars and World War I. On the 100th anniversary of the Dremjak massacre committed by Janković's soldiers, the municipality decided to replace the Serbian name with Elez Han.
