The Bertini power plant is the oldest hydroelectric power plant of the Edison group and one of the oldest in Italy.

When it was inaugurated in September 1898, it set a series of technological records: it was the largest electrical plant in Europe and among the first in the world (second only to that of Niagara Falls).

The plant was built with the aim of obtaining sufficient power and energy to electrify Milan's tram network, a public service that Edison had taken out under concession from the Municipality.

On 19 December 1898, the last line still served by horses, that of Porta Ticinese, was finally crossed by electric trams: Milan became one of the first European cities to have tram lines entirely transformed to electric traction.

The power plant is dedicated to the memory of the engineer Angelo Bertini.
