Brand new shelter here at Pfaffenholz, ideal for resting. At the end of the 16th century, the Pfaffenholz between Heldburg and Bad Colberg was a favorite hunting area of the then Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg (1586-1633). He shared his passion for hunting with numerous regents of neighboring territorial lords, whom he often invited to his hunting grounds. During his reign, Veste Heldburg took on the character of a hunting lodge, to which his successor, Ernst the Pious of Saxe-Gotha (1644-1675), also contributed. Around 1680, more than four hundred deer antlers adorned the rooms of Veste Heldburg.
