In Greek mythology, Galatea is the daughter of the aged sea god Nereus and his mermaid Doris. The statue survived the last war, only the two sphinxes - the guardians of the underworld - had to be removed in 1954.
The Association for the Promotion of Art launched a collection campaign in 1884 because Queen Olga, the wife of King Charles, wanted to donate a fountain. In the tendered artist competition to create a monumental fountain as the crowning glory of the Eugen season, the choice fell on the architect and sculptor Otto Rieth. After a few delays, the monumental complex made of reed sandstone with bronze figures was finally inaugurated on April 27, 1890. The queen was satisfied, but the population found the sparse clothing and lush curves of the beautiful Galatea hound.

The model for the sea nymph Galatea, which means "white as milk", was the young Berliner, who was also the model for the Berolina. The Galatea fountain was inaugurated on April 27, 1890. The queen was due to the beautiful fountain with the well-rounded figure with two young men on the top of the column satisfied. The people were less, however, they were bothered by the lush curves of the Galatea. When the complaining later did not want to stop and it became too much for the queen, she is said to have threatened to move the figure around 180 The citizens would then have had a permanent view of the back of the nymph from the city. According to legend, this view should then have had the necessary effect, and peace finally returned.
