The Adler Inn in Großholzleute, built around 1500 on the foundations of a moated castle, has not only a long history, but also one steeped in history.

During the Peasants' War, the insurgents gathered in the inn in Großholzleute. After the end of the Thirty Years' War, the house housed the post office of the Imperial Post Office from 1683 to 1813, run by the Thurn and Taxis family. It was also during this period that the Austrian Archduchess Maria Theresa and her entourage stayed overnight on their way from Austria to Freiburg, which was then in Austria. Two years later, her youngest daughter Marie-Antoinette, who later became Queen of France, also stayed at the Adler on her journey from Vienna to Versailles.

The last stagecoach stopped in front of the Adler in Großholzleute in 1908.

Another unforgettable moment occurred in the Adler in Großholzleute, when the literary alliance Group 47 chose the small Upper Swabian town for a conference. Among other things, at the meeting in 1958, Günther Grass read for the first time from his later world-famous novel "The Tin Drum".

In more recent history, in 1987, the British Princess Anne chose the traditional house in Großholzleute for a stay in the Allgäu. The inn then stood empty from 2013 to 2017. The Adler in Großholzleute, with its historic beams and homely cuisine, is now enjoying great popularity again.
