The writer Edward Lear already wrote that Pentidattilo is "so magical that it makes up for any effort endured to reach it". This village was abandoned until recently, today it is still a very suggestive place full of legends.

Pentedattilo: village of the "five fingers"
On the cliff of Monte Calvario there is Pentedattilo, a mysterious and fascinating village, a hamlet of Melito di Porto Salvo. The ancient village, abandoned until recently and considered over time to be the most charming ghost town in Calabria, is now being revived with new commercial and tourist activities. A beautiful village with incredible legends.
The village takes its name from the shape of the cliff of Mount Calvario: a giant hand with five fingers (from the Greek pente (πέντε), or five and dactilo (δάκτυλο), or fingers). First the castle was built right under this mountain, and then the whole old town, surrounded by an exceptional natural landscape, a popular destination for hikers and tourists from all over the world. This picturesque setting includes the valley of Sant'Elia, where the curious sandstone cliffs of Santa Lena and Prasterà are found, surrounded by gorse, olive trees, blackberries and prickly pears, almond trees and mimosa: a magnificent sight in spring.

Pentidattilo (Πενταδάττυλο, Pentadàttilo in Calabria Greek)[1] is a hamlet in the municipality of Melito Porto Salvo, in the province of Reggio Calabria. Until 1811 it was an autonomous municipality. Starting from the early years of the XXI century, and for no valid reason, it is more and more often called Pentedattilo, although already in modern documents it is much more often referred to as Pentidattilo (the three vowels a, e and i often alternate in historical sources due to the dialectal pronunciation of Reggio ab); Also in contemporary documents, as well as in traffic signs, the spelling was actually always Pentidattilo. The variant Pente- seems to follow the spelling of the word five in Modern Greek.
The enthroned village is 250 meters above sea level.m. Pentidattilo is enthroned on the cliff of Mount Calvary, with a characteristic shape reminiscent of a Cyclopean hand with five fingers and from which the name of the village derives in Greek πέντα-δάκτυλος (transliterated pènta-dàktylos), meaning "five fingers" .
What was the old village was finally abandoned in 1971, after which it had been declared uninhabitable three years earlier: the population had in fact migrated a little further downstream, forming a new small town from which to admire the old ghost town.
