The fishermen's chapel, also known as the fishermen's master's chapel, was first mentioned in a document in a tax description of the royal court mark for the year 1653. It can be seen in its old form on the engraving by Michael Wening across the street. Originally it was a Marienkapelle (To Our Lady Capelle, 1671). In 1838 the small chapel stood in the way of a planned new construction of the access road to the castle and was demolished. The new construction began in the same year on a site owned by the then master fisherman Georg Schröfl. Duchess Ludovica in Bavaria assumed the costs for the new building. In 1857, the property on which the new chapel had been built passed to the ducal family in an exchange.
When the Wittelsbach estates were divided up in 1936, the chapel with its own floor number was simply forgotten. It was not until 1986, when the Association for the Preservation of the Possenhofen Fisherman’s Chapel was founded, that it turned out after several research by the association that the chapel was still owned by Duke Max in Bavaria (Tegernsee).
With a donation from the duke in 2005, the chapel became the property of the Possenhofen chapel association, which has been collecting donations with many activities since it was founded in order to be able to carry out the urgently needed renovation.
Thanks to these efforts, as well as donations and grants from the Duke, the municipality of Pöcking, the monument protection and other private donors, the chapel has now been drained and renovated. The inauguration of the renovated chapel took place with an ecumenical service on October 9, 2010, at which Duke Max in Bavaria was among the numerous guests of honor and the mayor of Pöcking, Rainer Schnitzler, addressed the checkered history of the chapel in his welcoming address.Six months later, on May 8, 2011, the first Maypole in Possenhofen was erected on the square in front of the chapel by the chapel association.Source: fischerkapelle-possenhofen.de
