The Box Hill Fort was built in 1892, and used to store ammunition as part of a London Defence Scheme. In the late 1800s, there was concern that the size of the empire and the army spread across the world, that the British Isles could be vulnerable. "If London falls, so does the Empire," was a saying, so a number of defensive plans were created to protect London. It is now a home to different species of bats.
